On December 27, 2019, Oliver Heldens finally made his triumphant return to New York’s Schimanski night club as his alter ego HI-LO. The last time Oliver had played as HI-LO in New York was in 2016 during Halloween. I have been anxiously waiting to see him return and showing up to the venue, it seemed that the crowd had been anxiously waiting as well. The line to enter took over most of the block. One person had brought a boombox on the line and others joined in by shuffling to whatever tracks were playing.
The sold out crowd packed Schimanski to the brim but that didn’t stop anyone’s groove. Navigating through the crowd almost felt like a mission near impossible but it became worth it once Oliver Heldens got on the decks. So many of Oliver’s HI-LO hits including Renegade Mastah, Steam Train and Ooh La La were played and the crowd was receptive.
A personal favorite for me was when he played rising techno dj, ANNA’s “Forever Ravers.” There were also some epic moments that featured Green Velvet’s “Flash” and Enrico Sangiuliano’s “Symbiosis” and “Astral Projection” (which he played both at his Ultra Music Festival 2019 set and is still my favorite moments from his set of last year). After two wonderful hours and the venue still packed to capacity, it was time to say goodbye yet again. Oliver seemed to love the crowd and the crowd showed him the same love in return by showering him with applause after his set. He seemed to love it so much that he asked his fans in a tweet the next day, what other cities would like to see a HI-LO show. Time will only tell until he returns again.
