Point Blank Music School – Week 1

Maschine_-Final0012-copyThis year we had the opportunity to take a class at the global music school, Pointblank. There are locations in London and Los Angeles, but since we are in NY, we are taking an online course. A majority of the courses are geared towards music production, but we decided on the Music Industry course. Pointblank has been voted by readers of DJ mag as one the best music production school. You are able to take the the course at your leisure. There are readings as well as short videos from music industry leaders, such as Kwame Kwaten, an artist manager & producer and Steve Farris, managing director of Polarpatrol. The instructor Jen Anderson has a broad background within the music industry and we are excited to have her as an instructor. There is an hour Masterclass each week, where you are in live time with your instructor

and the other people taking the course. Since everyone is from all over the world and in

different time zones, if you are unable to attend the Masterclass there is a playback available for you to see what you missed. During the weekly course there are quick tests to see what you understood from the reading, to side exercises and research tasks, there are may things to be accomplished within one session. We are truly excited to be taking the Music Industry course! Each week we will be posting an article about the topic(s) covered during that week. This week was all about the music industry basics. Record companies, publishers, artist management, managers, promoters, booking agents and more were all discussed. The music industry has evolved with the times and today the business of music has blossomed into a multi-billion worldwide industry. It can easily be divided up into four sectors of how an artist can earn a living: Recording, Publishing, Live Music & Everything Else. What we found the most interesting is that back in the day, the artists main concern was making records and these additional pursuits were considered a distraction, but today all four of these sectors play a significant part in an artists success. There was such great information during this week and we are very excited to see what the next 7 weeks have in store for us. Until next week! ~Michelle for EDMNYC
