Editorial: Artists to Watch in 2014 By Andrew Niebling

 Artists to Watch 2014

In 2013 we saw the dance music industry take off to heights that we never would have thought it would go to. We saw a lot of artists grow to become some of the top in the game such as newly crowned number one DJ in the world, Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, W&W and Krewella. Dance music is continually growing and getting bigger, and the artists today have left a strong foundation in 2013 for the upcoming crop of talent to feed off of. Heading into 2014, my list of Artists to Watch are guys that stick to their roots and musical minds to take dance music on a journey to the next level and have the abilities to take it to an even bigger state than it already is.

Ben Prok and James Fitch also known as Prok & Fitch take the number one spot on my list after having one hell of a 2013! This duo has a sound like no other that just keeps you moving non stop till you cant move anymore. When I hear the name Prok & Fitch, all I think of is real dance music. Their sound and music is so funky and groovy that you cant help but dance when you hear it. In 2013 they dropped multiple huge original tracks and remixes such as “Justified“, “Time to Jam“, “Dope Drop”  and “Don’t Go” with The Cube Guys, just to name a few. Gaining support from big names like Carl Cox, Swedish House Mafia, Roger Sanchez, Mark Knight and Tiesto, there is no denying the talent and ability these two guys have. Being signed to labels like Axtone, Toolroom Records, CR2, Stealth and more, be prepared to see huge things coming from Prok & Fitch in 2014! @ProkFitch

When I  saw Anthony Attalla for the first time earlier this year opening up for Sebastian Ingrosso at the Highline Ballroom, I knew there was something special about this guy. The vibes in the room when he was on were incredible. Anthony had a massive year playing in Ibiza with Axwell and Seb’s “Departures” residency, support on the Swedish House Mafia’s One Last Tour, countless original releases, and multiple extended club sets all over the world. Mr. Attalla is on a serious move. He already kicked off 2014 with a bang… on January 13th his remix to “Luvaby” by Audio Junkies gets released,   February 10th he will release his original, “About You” (which, by the way, is an awesome track), then on Feburary 17th two more originals titled “Can’t Stop” and “711” will be released. I believe this is Anthony Attalla’s year to really shine, and everyone should keep their eyes on this guy! @AnthonyAttalla

When I first heard Swedish boss, Steve Angello, was starting a sub label to Size Matters called Size X, my interest was already piqued. “It’s a little jackier. It’s a little more darker in a sense of production. It’s not as main stage sounding. It’s more like club-y, proper, house dance tracks. It’s, like, the real deal“, Steve said. Just as I suspected, it sounded right up my alley. Once I first heard Trent’s music, specifically “Night Like This“, I knew he would be the future of this label. The North American talent dropped some of my favorite tracks in 2013 such as “Nice & Close“, “Understand“, “Born“, and closed out 2013 with “What I Need“. When I finally saw him for the first time at Pacha open up for the Mescal Kid himself, I was blown away. This guy is setting a standard from deep house to techno to tech house and will not stop till he is on top! @TrentCantrelle

Hands down one of my favorite artists of 2013 was this man right here, Jeremy Olander. The Pryda protege had an outstanding year and really showed the dance music world what he was made of. Being mentored by the one and only Legend Eric Prydz, there is no doubt that he is in the right hands. In 2013, Jeremy dropped, in my opinion, one of the biggest tracks of the year with “Let Me Feel“. That track proved that this man means business and that he is here to stay. Aside from “Let Me Feel”, Jeremy also put out “Bandersnatch“, “Rorschach“, and “Petroleum“. Aside from dropping countless originals, he also played major support for the “Epic 2.0” tour. Being under the wing of Prydz, we can only imagine what Jeremy and the rest of the Pryda Friends have in store for us in 2014! @JeremyOlander

You can’t talk about NYC without it… BROOKLYN! That funky bass line with the Notorious B.I.G sample just gives you that old school vibe with a fresh, tech house sound. Most of his productions are some of my favorite beats on my iPod. Tracks like “Brooklyn“, “Universe“,  “Ghetto Boy“, “New York Swag” and “Bubblin Up“, all released in 2013, are straight bombs! When I first heard “Brooklyn” back in February, I knew it was going to be a monster track, and it is STILL on the Top 100 chart on Beatport! Gaining major support from Mark Knight, Umek, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez and Stefano Noferini, you know Groovebox will undoubtedly embark on another successful year. With all his originals and support, I fully expect him to have his NYC debut very soon! @Groovebox_House

When I first heard “Dinosaur” and then the “Dinosaur 2K12 remix“, I needed to know who made these killer tracks. Once I found out Jaz was the protege of Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, I knew he was going to be good straight from that moment. When I finally saw him live at Pacha opening up for the Dutch duo, he played an absolutely outstanding set. Getting to talk to him that night and finding out he was the same age as me (21), I was amazed at what he was doing. Jaz had a major release in 2013 as he collabed with SJRM on “Firefaces (Im Not Listening)” which went on to have major success. With mentors such as Sunnery  and Ryan, I believe Jaz will have a break out year in 2014! @JazVonD

Hands down I can say that Tyler Sherritt is easily one of the fastest rising stars in the industry today. He could absolutely do it all from singing, songwriting, producing and DJing which distinguishes him as a force to be reckoned with. Tyler made huge waves in 2013 as he graced multiple headlining performances at Pacha NYC, Cielo, Webster Hall, Santos Party House, HQ Nightclub & HQ Beach Club in Atlantic City, Avalon Hollywood in California, Ruby Sky in San Francisco, and Mansion Miami. Tyler also joined the Insomniac Events Electric Daisy Carnival NYC where he played on the main stage. Another huge step in 2013 was when he released his first independent record “Petrichord” under Gareth Emery’s Garude Music. While being supported by guys like Gareth, Armin Van Burren, Dash Berlin, Paul Van Dyk, Afrojack and Deniz Koyu there is no doubt in my mind that Tyler has a huge year ahead of him! @Tylersherritt

NYC Local Artists to Watch 2014

Grand & Warren Coming off an amazing 2013 where they played alongside acts such as Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, John  Dahlback, Deniz Koyu, Shermanology, Mat Zo, TJR, Quintino, R3hab, and capping off the year alongside Hardwell at Pier 94 and NYE with Arty, Grand & Warren are already in position to take off in 2014. Their new single “Tres” was just released a month ago, and is a monster track waiting to explode! With their big room electro sound, mixed with a little tech house too, these two have a big 2014 ahead of them! @GrandandWarren

Anthony Cardinale – I have been following Anthony’s career for a long time now, and let me tell you, this was his best year yet! He was invited to Electric Daisy Carnival, Las Vegas, and he played alongside artists such as Victor Calderone, Stacy Pullen, Carlo Lio, The Junkies, and Mindcontrol. In addition, he released two monster EPs called “Hold & Grind” and “Intertwine“. At only 20 years old and already gaining support from guys like Maceo Plex, Luciano, David Herrero, Hollen and Wally Lopez, this kid is sure to have a major year, just in time to buy his own bottle of champagne! @Djantcardinale

Zack Edward – NYC transplanted to Miami resident DJ, Zack Edward, was on fire in 2013. His mashups became famous when they were supported by an extraordinary talent pool of DJs like Tiesto, David Guetta, Hardwell, Nicky Romero, Tommy Trash, Bingo Players, Thomas Gold, and Deniz Koyu. Zack played numerous events from Webster Hall in NYC, to Hyde SLS Miami, to Neverland Festival in Zimbabwe. He also put out his first original track called “BRKLYN“. Zack says 2014 is going to be all about the originals for him as he focuses to release a lot of new upcoming music to start off the year! @DjZackEdward

Mikey PuerariAlso known as Mikey P, he has been making a big name for himself throughout the tri-state area. At the young age of 20, he too has already gained support from Danny Avila, R3hab, and Junior Sanchez. In 2013, he played venues such as Pacha NYC, 4Sixty6, Bliss Lounge, and his biggest event yet, playing the main stage at Electric Adventure this past summer. Mikey P has warmed up the decks for such headliners as Zedd, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Afrojack, Michael Woods, Dyro, Morgan Page, MakJ, and R3hab, to name a few. With 2014 just underway, Mikey has a lot of originals in the vault ready to be dropped to take his career to the next level! @Djmikeypuerari
