I’m going to keep this short and sweet. If you’ve ever read any of my reviews before, I usually start out with some sort of “attention-grabbing” introduction, give a little bit of background on the artists, meticulously reconstruct the night with as many adverbs and track lists as possible, and then I bring the review full circle and it’s a wrap. Well, there’s no need for that this time around. Two of the most prominent names in trance were in company last Friday night at Santos Party House and it was an Esscala Entertainment party… that right there should tell you that the night was nothing short of awesome!
The two DJs I’m speaking of are none other than Mark Eteson and Jorn Van Deynhoven. Mark Eteson was originally scheduled to play in NYC last month, so when I saw him on the bill for this show I was pleasantly surprised. Mark Eteson is best known for his residency at Godskitchen in the UK and for producing not one, not two but FOUR radio shows. Jorn Van Deynhoven has also made quite a name for himself in the trance scene with an impressive 65 remixes under his belt and being signed to the largest trance label in the world, Armada Music. Opening up for both of these heavy hitters would be Pirate Radio, making their first big club appearance to date.
The night started off as usual, 11:00pm on the dot partygoers began to trickle into Santos Party House, drinks started flowing and the night began to shape up and get going. When I arrived Pirate Radio were on the decks and the electric Guitar. Yes, you read that right… an electric guitar. Pirate Radio is a cross-genre EDM collaboration that smoothly blends traditional EDM with the sounds of the electric guitar, encompassing a wide array of musical influences. Pirate Radio had everyone on his or her feet and as they finished it was time Mark to take the decks.
Mark Eteson came on strong and finished strong too. Eteson played tracks such as Zedd “Clarity”, Imogean Heap – “Canvas” (Mark Eteson Re-paint), Mark Eteson ft. Audrey Gallagher “Breathe On Me” and Nero “Reaching Out” (Mark Eteson Remix). After hearing such a monster set I thought to myself, how is JVD going to top this?
As soon as I finished my sentence Jorn Van Deynhoven took the decks and absolutely blew my mind. JVD is a complete tyrant behind the decks and he took no prisoners, dropping tracks such as Markus Schulz “Apache”, JVD “Spotlight”, RAM – “RAMsterdam” (JVD remix), Andain – “Beautiful Things” (JvD’s Sundale Remix) and Armin’s remix of “Use Somebody” ft. Laura Jensen.
One word, epic, describes the night to a T. If you weren’t there, I’m sorry, but you missed one hell of a show. If you ever get a chance to check out any of these guys in the future, I suggest you do because you won’t be disappointed. Thanks EDMNYC and keep up the good work Esscala Entertainment. See you soon on the dance floor!
