Review: AVICII NYE Event @ Pier 94 with Cazzette, Arty and Swanky Tunes 01/01/12

To many in the US and around the world, New Years Eve means New York City, and with a plethora of the most choontastic events ever to occur in the same night. The largest of which was no doubt Avicii with Arty, Cazzette and Swanky Tunes at Pier 94.

As someone who has been following Avicii for the past couple of years in NYC, Miami, and Vegas, I was thrilled to see him scheduled for a return to New York City, along with Cazzette (comprised of Avicii’s fellow Swedes Sebastian Furrer & Alexander Björklund) other guest DJ’s on the lineup included rising Russian trance star Arty visiting directly from Russia along with Swanky Tunes , another amazing Russian duo. The mix of house and trance sounds made for the perfect storm lineup of musical eargasms for a New Years Eve deserving of such a powerful performance.

Let’s face it, for many including myself, pure Ibiza / Balearic trance is tough to dance to for hours on end, and pure non vocal house set can get a little bland as well. This lineup, however, kept the fans on their toes from start to finish with bombs coming from every directions.

To walk you through my night… approaching Pier 94 that evening, the New Years magic of the city could be felt blocks away. Not only an enormous warehouse complex, but a massive line of EDM lovers could be seen in full garb as we neared. However, to their credit, the promoters of this event were clearly on top of the crowd, and getting into the party was smooth.

The anteroom to the NYE extravaganza was well setup to manage the various lists with plenty of space and sofas for just hanging around. Upon entering the main room the only place I could really compare it to would be the Anjunabeats party at the Ice Palace in Miami this past March. There were of course balloons everywhere and dancers in colorful attire and paint dancing on top of crazy truck/limos? that were surrounded by the various bartenders. Very little wait for drinks was a nice sign for a room with at least 5000 partygoers.

We entered shortly before midnight, to the closing sounds of Arty dropping Killmode [White Label] w/ Fatboy Slim – Right Here, Right Now. There were already thousands of fans awaiting the countdown to New Years in their best EDM attire. At the stroke of midnight we got closer to the stage and I could have sworn it was Avicii on the decks as I thought I heard the track “Levels” blasting on the top notch sound system brought in for this event.

Arty was the DJ who blew the crowd away with his own tracks including Mozart with Mat Zo and his own track “Around the World”. Fans were also thrilled with the Sander tracks “Love is Darkness” and his mashup with First State “Koko Prutataa”. Of course, no Arty set (or most trance DJ’s) these days is complete without his remix of “Digital Punk” by Ferry Corsten.

Oh how time is a blur on New Years… what time did Avicii go on again? Backstage bars and lots of champagne will certainly mix it all up but according to my texts I’m gonna say it was shortly before 2am that the Swedish phenom took over. Avicii brought the enthusiasm for the music that has caused his appeal to skyrocket over the past couple of years.

I don’t remember another DJ having made such a meteoric rise to success that comes with each track he produces and remixes. His track “Penguins” has been borrowed, both legally and “semi-legally” for more mashups than I can recall for such a recent release, and with releases like “Levels” and “Bromance” he’s bound for more greatness.

There’s gotta be something to be said about the Avicii machine. The marketing minds behind the huge events that someone barely legal to drink in the US has been putting together around the world. His DJ ranking rose 33 spots to #6 this past year. That definitely takes the whole package to obtain, and there’s no doubt that this is only the beginning for the rising star.

Avicii’s set brought us into the early hours of 2012… certainly after 4am, when after two encores he turned the decks over to Swanky Tunes to wrap things up with a continued blend of “trouse” with tracks ranging from David Guetta and Tiesto to Sander Van Doorn. To be certain Arty brought the most pure trance to the evening, but all DJ’s threw down some amazing mashups and their own blend of EDM magic.

Without a doubt, Pier 94 was the place to be this New Years for electronic music fans, with a lineup that was hard to match with a mix of styles for any raver and an afterparty that I can only imagine was just as amazing.

If you haven’t caught Arty previously, he’ll be back at Pacha on January 13th, and I’m sure that Avicii and the others won’t be far behind for future visits. I’d definitely mark my calendar for these and others in the onslaught of EDM greatness we’ve recently been graced with.
