Ultra Music Festival started off very relaxed. Our team was located in mid-beach Miami and taking an Uber or taxi to the festival wasn’t a problem at all. Shuttle busses running back and forth made it easy for the thousands of people trying to get there in time for their favorite DJ’s. The security was something to mention for sure; extremely strict and extremely focussed they made sure Ultra was a safe place for everybody.
Lines at GA, Press and Artist weren’t too crazy, we picked up our passes within 10 minutes and proceeded onto the press boat which was thankfully WiFi-heaven. The design of the stages were absolutely beautiful, the ‘A State Of Trance’ megastructure was indeed mega and it was very well organized and the atmosphere was great. It took us a couple of hours to find our ways and figure out which bands allow which routes, but with the help of the well organized people in yellow “Let Us Help You” shirts we worked our way through it.
Starting off with Maurice West‘s set at 4pm at ‘Revealed Stage’ we could feel the Ultra crowd getting into the vibe that was gonna last all weekend. Maurice introduced a lot of new music to the world and played some classics which he gave his own signature touch to. This DJ is for sure very good at playing a good set of banging beats; no wonder he’s getting supported by DJ’s like W&W and Blasterjaxx.
After new talent Maurice West‘s set we decided to wander around the festival so find some familiar faces, get to know the area and of course try and find wifi so we could keep you guys up to date with everything that was going on at that time. Around 7pm one of our favorite DJ duo’s the Sick Individuals took over ‘Revealed Stage’ and we could hear how excited the crowd was from a mile away.
Dropping the song ‘Waiting For You’ they produced with Hardstyle legends D-Block & S-te-Fan they immediately got everybody jumping up and down; this track is so contagious! Followed by their song ‘Helix’ produced with Holl & Rush people started pulling out their Sick Individuals merch and the party really started! Twenty minutes into their set there were dance-off’s, a screaming crowd and music-industry-people coming from backstage to see what the hype was all about!
After the Sick Individuals set we ran over to Mainstage where Dutch legend Armin van Buuren was playing his first set of that Ultra weekend. He immediately got us in a state of trance and lasers. The stage and production was so beautifully done that it took everybody’s breath away. A huge shout out to Armin van Buuren, Ultra and the production team for all the visuals! What an experience!

After Armin’s set we went into the crowd to take some pictures of you guys for our social media, if you’re not following us; maybe you’ll find yourself on @edmnyc. Everybody was having the time of their life dancing to the last three sets of the night; Hardwell, DJ Snake and Axwell /\ Ingrosso. When the crowd was starting to sit down and relax; DJ Snake decided to pull J Balvin on stage so he could perform ‘Mi Gente’ live in front of the entire Ultra crowd. Everybody that was taking a break decided it wasn’t time to sit down yet and started jumping around again! Axwell /\ Ingrosso closed out ‘Ultra Mainstage’ on Friday and they had everybody talking about a Swedish House Mafia reunion.
And let’s talk about our love for techno too. Two stages with the best techno artists; it can’t get any better!
The first bigger one, called ‘Resistance Megastructure’ was the stage of Carl Cox, who was playing there during the next two days of Ultra! For the Friday lineup he invited Josh Wink, Pan-Pot, Joseph Capriati and Adam Bayer!
As we entered the ‘Resistance Megastructure Stage’, behind the decks was the german duo from Berlin; Pan-Pot. We really liked the set and know their strictly underground club style, but at Ultra they used great old classics and played very energetic! We were very surprised to hear ‘Joyenergizer’ by Joykittykonti or ‘Born Slippy’ by Underworld.
Enjoying the sets of other Djs, we couldn’t wait longer for one of our favorite’s – Carl Cox! The King of techno music, simply a legend! ‘Oh Yes! Oh Yes!’ started playing and the party started!
This already DJ that has been in the industry for decades shows with every beat his love for music! Dancing behind the decks, laughing to the crowd, dropped his most played track ‘Now Let Me See You Work’; he rocked the dance floor! The venue and the people make the athmosphere at the music festivals but how the stage look is also important for us; visitors.
‘Resistance Arcadia Spider’
The stage was basically one big spider with a DJ-booth in the middle; hanging a few feet above ground it was entertaining to watch. We’re wondering how the DJ’s view up there was!
We were really happy to see and hear the track ‘Hot Since 82′ and the next music legend Pete Tong. We loved the first artist and with his amazing track and he got the crowd to another dimension with his remix of ‘Obsessions’ by Technasia. In our opinion it was one of the best sets of ‘Arcadia Spider Stage’ that Friday evening.
Ultra also came in strong with merchandise; bomber jackets and snapbacks were selling out in just a few hours slowly transforming the glitter and led-light crowd in true Ultra fans having the time of their life. All for sale in their giant store somewhere in the middle of all the stages; not cheap, but a memory for years! Luckily enough there were enough food stands to keep everybody satisfied and fuel people with more energy to dance the night away.
Day 1 of Ultra was an extremely succesful day. Stay tuned for our review on day 2 and 3!
