What Will Be The Future Of Webster Hall?
The biggest story in New York this week is about the 131 year-old venue that I stand before. Announced earlier this week, Webster Hall will be sold off to two firms – AEG Presents and Barclay Center owners, Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment. The two companies will acquire all of the operations, assets and the building lease and Bowery Presents, also recently acquired Hy AEG, will take over the booking and talent buying.
Now, AEG owns some pretty cool venues like Play Station Theater, Forest Hills Stadium and El Rey Theater in LA, so it’s not crazy to think they have some big plans for venue. Not to mention artists playing Webster Hall will have connections to all of the other venues.
After 27 years of ownership, the Ballinger Family has decided to sell – for a rumored $35 million.
Regular Webster Hall patrons, including myself, are eager and anxious to see what comes of this multi-million dollar deal. Yes, when big agencies take over, it can be detrimental to the heart of the establishment. But with a $10 million makeover, and it also being deemed a New York landmark, let’s hope they are gentle with her!
On the other hand, some club-goers are shocked by the news and somewhat terrified that the Webster Hall we know and love will be lost in the grip of these two large-scale companies.
Nikki Lopez states, “One thing that I absolutely loved about Webster Hall was that it was family owned. A small little intimate venue where my friends and I could go to every weekend and sometimes several days of the week to sing, dance, & jump along to the music with a staff that became friends and then family…This truly is the end of an era though… I feel like a friend will soon be gone.”
One big piece of Webster hall is the staff. Even with artists who sell out the venue, Webster Hall is filled with workers who love their jobs and ultimately make it a great experience for everyone that walks through the door.
