On their way across the continent in this year’s installment of the “Smash The House North American Tour”, Belgian mega-DJs, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike made camp in New York City on Thursday, September 20th to play the famed Pacha NYC nightclub. This year has been even bigger than 2011 for them, having produced another Tommorowland anthem for this year's festival, releasing tracks on their own label, Smash The House Records, featuring artists such as, Yves V, Pedro Enriques, Dyro and Jacob Van Hage, and Basto!, and all around making a name for themselves touring the world.
On Thursday night, I got to see them make their Pacha NYC debut and it was a fantastic event to behold. If you're into rapid-fire banger after banger sets, then this was the night for you. After Tyler Sherritt did an amazing job getting the crowd warmed up, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike took over at 12:45am. The club went crazy as soon as the neon green cap atop Mike's head was seen emerging from the shadows behind the booth. The vibe was already close to peak level and what DVLM were about to bestow would only make it even wilder. An hour into the set was when they were, in my opinion, at full throttle. They played “Greyhound in My Mind” (LIHS mashup), “Atom”, “Bong” mashed with “Personal Jesus”, and Alvaro's “Make the Cr
owd Go”. That last one gave everyone a refreshing blast of CO2 in sync with the massive echo to the “Are you ready?”.
The thrill of seeing Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike is in part due to their uncanny ability to play the songs you absolutely never would expect to hear during a night out at your typical EDM nightclub. Thursday was no different as we heard Nickelback's “How You Remind Me” and a chilling moment when they allowed the crowd to sing the chorus to Fun's “We Are Young”. It is great seeing them make anything work when you couldn't even imagine it fitting the vibe. They went on to play more favorites like, Knife Party – “Internet Friends” and The Killers – “Mr. Brightside” (Marco V Treatment), both of which threw the crowd into frenzy.
By 2:30, it was already time for them to leave. I decided to navigate as close as I could get on the main floor to take a closing video. This track is one I have heard variations of, but the exact remix is something I know I haven't heard before. Check it out…
After their performance I spoke with both of them about what's new and upcoming. They mentioned their new track on Doorn Records with Yves V called, “Loops and Tings” and are excited to continue on their Smash The House North American Tour. It's always a treat to see Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike in NYC. Hopefully they come back very soon and hopefully you are there when they do.
