Review: Avicii at Sun National Bank Center NJ and GLO, Long Island by Rich Alberto

What’s better than one Avicii show in one week? TWO!!! Phew! What a week! I caught Avicii twice last week: Tuesday in Trenton, NJ at the Sun National Bank Center and Friday at GLO Nightclub in Long Island, NY, so this will be a 2-in-1 double review. So here we go, first thing’s first: if you are a fan of incredibly catchy melodic progressive tracks and have not yet seen Avicii live… do yourself a favor and get a ticket for the next show (if you can).

I saw Avicii live for the first time at his Pacha NYC debut on October 22, 2010 and merely knew a few tracks of his at that time (“My Feelings For You” & “Alcoholic” I distinctly remember). Looking back on it, there was room to breathe and dance, there wasn’t much of a line, and the show was FREE! After seeing him live several times since then, that first experience at an Avicii show is MUCH different if you see him today. Be prepared for:

1.) Expensive tickets
2.) A really long line (as each show will always be sold out)
3.) Very little room to move inside the venue
3.) A lot of crazy neon clothing and glow sticks
4.) And of course, being surrounded by people who only really know “Levels” (Side note: Not trying to hate but if you like the song so much, wouldn’t you look into more and more tracks from the artist and of the entire genre in itself? Just saying. Shout out to the people who still throw on his “Set Me Free” remix by Phonat).

I’ll start this review chronologically, with Tuesday’s show in Trenton, NJ. My friend Bill and I hit the Turnpike South to go catch Tim and Cazzette in action. We managed to catch the end of Cazzette’s set which was pretty much fraught with hard, freaky electro-pounding beats. To be honest, his set was a bit of a blur but it seemed like an all-around energetic set (we had a few drinks by then). But Cazzette really set the mood for the evening. The venue was….big (as it was very much like a convention hall/arena). It seemed like they sold all the floor seats yet didn’t really sell any higher level seating AT ALL, which was weird. The crowd was mostly comprised of college students from TCNJ/Rider/Rutgers/Monmouth so the energy level was undoubtedly through the roof. Here’s a partial set list from what I gathered:

  • David Guetta & Avicii – Sunshine (Original Mix)
  • Avicii – Fade Into Darkness (Albin Myers Remix)
  • Tim Berg – Seek Bromance
  • Avicii – Enough is Enough (Don’t Give Up On Us)
  • Dirty South vs. Green Velvet – Coming Home vs. Flash (Nicky Romero Remix)
  • Tim Mason – The Moment (Original Mix)
  • Swedish House Mafia – Save the World (Alesso Remix) vs. Save the World (Original Mix)
  • Avicii – Swede Dreams (Original Mix)
  • Avicii – Levels (Original Mix)
  • Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso – Calling (Original Mix)
  • Armin van Buuren feat. Laura V – Drowning (Avicii Remix)
  • Pendulum – The Island (AN21, Max Vangeli & Steve Angello Remix)
  • Avicii vs. Kings of Leon – Abow vs. Sex is On Fire
  • Robyn – Hang With Me (Avicii Remix)
  • Adrian Lux – Teenage Crime (Axwell & Henrik B Remode)
  • Avicii – Silhouettes (Original Mix)
  • Nadia Ali – Rapture (Avicii Remix)
  • Alesso – Nillionaire (ID Remix??)
  • Tiesto ft. Diplo – Come On (Original Mix)
  • David Tort – Acid Rocker w/ Justice – We Are Your Friends (Acapella)
  • Dirty South & Thomas Gold – Alive (Tommy Trash Remix)
  • The Killers – Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)
  • House of Pain – Jump Around (Deadmau5 Remix)

Needless to say, the set was outstanding and the energy in the place was palpable. His mixing… well… simple as usual. He’s no Luke on the decks, but he stands alone right now in the production game (wait till Avicii hits the Garden). Even though there were tons of people at the venue, there was some space to jump up and down, hang out, etc., which was awesome. Tim absolutely killed the place as usual.

After 72-hours of recovery, I was ready for Friday night at GLO in Long Island for round two of Tim Berg. I left my house kinda late, so I got there close to midnight. The line was around the building even at that time so I figured I’d have to wait because I knew it was sold out. Turned out, if you already had tickets (which luckily, I did), will call was on the SIDE of the line at the front… fail. I met up with Ms. Justine Murphy at Avicii’s VIP table as Cazzette was finishing up their set. The place was packed!!! I’ve been to GLO a bunch of times for Avicii, Axwell, Kaskade, etc. and have never seen it that packed. The four expected elements of seeing Avicii prevailed for this show (although there was a little bit less of the neon clothing). After all, it’s a club and not an arena.

Normally, we post up with Ms. Pace at the very front where the booth is and we just flat out rage but it was a mad house up there. So we split our presence between the very middle of the “dance” floor and the side-ish of the booth. Nonetheless, it is very difficult to describe the experience if you’ve never seen Avicii. It’s just banger after banger and there’s no stopping it. There are two sides to his set: the good part is, every track is a monster and that’s always sweet. The bad news is, even before you leave your house, you know what he’s going to play. In Tim’s defense though, what is he NOT going to play… “Seek Bromance” or “Rapture” or “Levels” or “Fade Into Darkness” or “Save the World” or “Calling” or “Silhouettes” or “Drowning”? If you were him, wouldn’t you want to melt people’s faces off too? Here’s the setlist I kept track of (a few changes from Tuesday’s set):

  • David Guetta & Avicii – Sunshine (Original Mix)
  • Tim Berg – Seek Bromance
  • Tom Hangs ft. Shermanalogy – Blessed (Avicii Edit)
  • Philter – Revolver (Avicii Remix)
  • Avicii – Enough is Enough (Don’t Give Up On Us)
  • Dirty South vs. Green Velvet – Coming Home vs. Flash (Nicky Romero Remix)
  • Tim Mason – The Moment (Original Mix)
  • Swedish House Mafia – Save the World (Alesso Remix) vs. Save the World (Original Mix)
  • The Prodigy – Funky Shit (Firebeatz Remix??)
  • Avicii – Swede Dreams (Original Mix)
  • Avicii – Levels (Original Mix)
  • Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso – Calling (Original Mix)
  • Armin van Buuren feat. Laura V – Drowning (Avicii Remix)
  • Pendulum – The Island (AN21, Max Vangeli & Steve Angello Remix)
  • Avicii vs. Kings of Leon – Abow vs. Sex is On Fire
  • Robyn – Hang With Me (Avicii Remix)
  • Adrian Lux – Teenage Crime (Axwell & Henrik B Remode)
  • Avicii – Silhouettes (Original Mix)
  • Nadia Ali – Rapture (Avicii Remix)
  • Hard Rock Sofa feat. St. Brothers – Blow Up (Thomas Gold vs Axwell Remix)
  • The Temptations – Papa Was a Rolling Stone (the wild remix Avicii plays titled “Ash/Papa”?)
  • Tiesto ft. Diplo – C’mon (Original Mix)
  • Congorock – Babylon (Original Mix)
  • Afrojack vs. Steve Angello – Pacha on Acid vs. Teasing Mr. Charlie
  • Avicii – Tweet It w/ Walking on a Dream (Acapella)
  • Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed (Max Vangeli & AN21Remix)
  • Dirty South & Thomas Gold – Alive (Tommy Trash Remix)
  • Avicii & Sebastian Drums – My Feelings For You (Original Mix)
  • The Killers – Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)

Again, the place was PACKED, but on the side of the booth there was some nice space to jump around and to uhh… jump up, jump up and get down haha! But on the real, had an unbelievable time both nights. Big shout out to Frank Montagne and his crew on the side of the booth. We basically just rocked out and jumped like animals while singing girl vocals, but whatever. I could’ve sworn GLO was going to be the better time before I went to both shows. But looking back, the Trenton show was just out of control. The only thing that saddens me is that we’ll never really get to see Avicii in a more personal venue without being MOBBED by people ever again. Can’t win ‘em all I guess.

I’m about ready to sign out on this review but before I do that, a word of advice: keep yourself in the loop by checking out upcoming events/news on EDMNYC.com. There’s Morillo, Thomas Gold, Max Vangeli & AN21 comin’ up, but more importantly, GO SEE DIMITRI VEGAS & LIKE MIKE at District 36 on West 36th Street on October 23rd!!! It might be the best show of all of these listed above. These two are amazing!

Much love and err… “enough is enough, just gotta let go” haha!
